Heather Bay Backpacking

anadyr_trip_reviews_logoThe guides of Anadyr Adventures pioneered this backcountry-hiking trip. The route starts at sea level, involves a meandering approach to Columbia Glacier, it scrambles up and down a countless number of drainages, crosses numerous waterways both by foot and pack-raft, travels over two glaciers, ascends a mountain pass, and then descends via bushwhack to tide line at the face of a second tidewater glacier, before finally meeting a trail that leads back to Valdez. This trip is centered in an area where maps can’t keep pace with the changes in the glacial landscape. This trip is meant for the adventurous, for those who want to tread where few people have, for those that want to see a new landscape as it is unveiled after thousands of years under ice. This trip is backpacking in Prince William Sound at its best!

anadyr_trip_reviews_logoThe only one of its kind! Anadyr Adventures takes it one step farther by offering this multi-day exploratory kayaking tour for nature lovers and whale watchers. Visit Green and Montague Islands, perhaps the most remote and beautiful island paradises in Alaska. As some of the finest and most pristine, it is the best territory in all of Prince William Sound for seeing both Humpback and Orca (Killer) Whales. Join us for the paddling trip of your lifetime and see Prince William as few kayakers have ever seen it.

Anadyr Base Camps

Kayak camping is undoubtedly the best way to explore the wonders of Prince William Sound, and Anadyr Adventures has been showing people the time of their lives on our wilderness camping trips for the last 17 years. All our guests love being in the pristine northern temperate rainforest but some would prefer a more relaxed schedule than expedition style camping trip allows. To give people more time to soak in the splendor of this maritime wilderness, we’ve decided to offer two base camp alternatives in 2007. These camping experiences will allow a more intimate experience of areas we have found especially interesting to explore.

Both the Granite and Flent point trips will include round trip water taxi, prepared gourmet meals, a screen dining tent, camp chairs and table and tarps to set up a comfortable base camp. From this home base you will have the options and flexibility to experience Prince William Sound at your leisure.

Base camping is ideal for the following activities:

        • Sea-Kayak day trips
        • Family vacations with children
        • Birdwatching
        • Photography
        • Hiking
        • Fishing
        • Wildlife viewing
        • Wildflower identification

Flent Point Base Camp

Relax at camp and watch the parade of giant icebergs float past on their way out to sea as they ride the currents away from the massive Columbia Glacier. A day can be spent paddling and hiking our way amongst the ice closer to the icy giant, and exploring the newly unveiled Columbia Bay. A shorter day paddle to Granite Cove to view the ice formations there and the sheer cliffs that line the bay is also an excellent way to spend a day. Take a day trip to Billy’s hole in Long Bay to view one of the area’s salmon runsand the complex ecosystem based on it. This is also an excellent place to spot black bears and river otters. If time allows, and the tides are right, make the crossing over to Glacier Island and check out the skookumchuck wave at the mouth of Eagle Bay Lagoon.

Granite Point Base Camp

From our base above a beautiful beach lined peninsula near Granite Point the paddling and hiking options are endless. If the seas are flat we can spend our day kayaking around the remote, uninhabited Outpost and Fairmont islands, or paddle along the sea cave lined south side of Glacier Island with Stellar Sea-Lions and Tufted and Horned Puffins. If the seas are not so calm, Granite and Cedar Bays offer miles of phenomenal protected shoreline paddling, crystal clear water, and hundreds of hiking options. A mellow day at camp can be spent fishing from shore, birdwatching, or scanning the channel between the mainland and Glacier Island for the Humpback whales and Dall’s Porpoise that like to cruise the deep waters there.
